Maintaining healthy gums is key to good oral health and preventing gum disease
What is gum disease?
Gum disease occurs when plaque builds up under and along the gum line. Plaque is a sticky coating containing bacteria that can cause infection and lead to gum disease and tooth decay. The build-up of plaque can also cause gingivitis.
Gingivitis is an early sign of gum disease and it affects the surface layers of the gum, particularly where the gum meets the tooth.
The signs of gingivitis are:
• bleeding gums, especially when brushing or eating • redness and swelling
Periodontitis is an advanced stage of gum disease that may occur if gingivitis is not treated. Periodontitis is the inflammation of the periodontium, caused by the bacteria in plaque and the body’s immune response to it.
Signs of periodontitis include:
• bleeding gums • swollen gums • receding gums • bad breath • a bad taste in the mouth • tenderness when biting • loose teeth, or teeth that have moved
What is the best way to get rid of gum disease?
Early prevention is paramount to maintaining your gum health and the team at Chinchilla Dental recommend:
• Brushing twice a day with an electric toothbrush • Replace your toothbrush every three months • Floss daily • Use a natural mouthwash (alcohol free) • Visit us at least once a year
How will a dentist treat gum disease?
In severe cases of gum disease, root planing (debridement) may be necessary. Root planing is a deep clean under the gums that removes bacteria from the roots of your teeth. In mild cases of gum disease, antibiotics and a regular dental check-up can alleviate further issues from occurring.
